Compliance Support Veterinarian- The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) - Toronto, ON
COMPLIANCE SUPPORT VETERINARIAN

Working on behalf of the SickKids Animal Care Committee (ACC), the Compliance Support Veterinarian (CSV) is responsible for ensuring SickKids adherence to institutional policies, provincial regulations, and national standards for the welfare of animals in science and educational programs. Ensuring full compliance with standards set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and the Animals for Research Act of Ontario, the CSV acts in support of all ACC oversight processes, policies, and procedures. The role fosters a culture of compliance and best practice as it relates to the care of animals used for research.

Job Responsibilities/Key Deliverables:
• Manage SickKids' PAR program to ensure that animal-based work at SickKids aligns with the ACC approved Animal Use Protocols (AUP) and conforms to all regulatory and institutional requirements.
• Track issues of protocol deviation and identify the need for protocol amendments during PAR audits, or from information received from the Laboratory Animal Services (LAS) and veterinary staff or ACC members to ensure compliance.
• Manage and respond to all compliance notifications and report non-compliance issues to the ACC and appropriate institutional officials as needed.
• Work effectively, independently, collaboratively, and collegially with animal users and principal investigators to solve non-compliance issues.
• Prepare reports to the ACC on matters of non-compliance and work diligently with the ACC Chair and the Head, Lab Animal Services to determine satisfactory resolutions and ensure compliance.
• Oversee compliance and develop facility policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures through effective and ongoing communications with LAS personnel and animal users.
• Work with the ACC Coordinator to notify animal users of the need for supplemental training identified through incident reports or concerns brought forward by PAR audits.
• Participate in AUP review and ACC meetings to provide compliance updates.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Head, LAS or the ACC.

Education:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with a license to practice veterinary medicine in Ontario.

Experience:
• A minimum of three years of experience of animal care-related responsibilities or research management in an academic or healthcare setting.
• Working knowledge of standards set by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and the Animals for Research Act of Ontario.
• Ability to communicate and relate with individuals with many different roles and diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.
• Ability to exercise good judgement and confidentiality in a compliance role, while converting findings of non-compliance into constructive educational opportunities.
• Ability to work independently and effectively under tight deadlines with an understanding of the need to balance scientific progress with animal welfare.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Employment Type: On-site work, Part time (2 days/14 hours per week- Wednesday mandatory and Fridays), two years contract with possibility of renewal
