ANIMAL TECHNICIAN (BAND LEVEL 5)

DUTIES
The successful applicant will perform technical work in the care and use of a variety of laboratory research species. Duties include providing daily husbandry and technical support including day to day animal health observation, animal handling and restraint, weaning, sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri-, and post-operative care; assisting with research procedures as needed; administering therapeutic medications; performing individual animal identification techniques; participating in training workshops on animal procedures and equipment use; procedure, supply and surgery room preparation, surgical assistance and maintenance duties; and performing other related duties as required.  Weekend and holiday work is required on a rotational basis.

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience (2+ years) in the care of animals in a veterinary clinic or a CCAC approved laboratory animal science facility; graduation from an accredited post-secondary institution with a diploma from a 2-year or 3-year animal health or veterinary technology program, CALAS certification at RLAT level, or ability to achieve this status within 2 years after hire. Knowledge of animal care, handling, restraint, breeding, behavior and performing common technical procedures in laboratory animal species is required.  Ability to work with small animals, farm animals and aquatics and associated housing environments. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, and ergonomically perform physical activities with good manual dexterity and vision is required.  Experience working with MS Office for word processing, data entry and email communication is required.  Experience working in a surgical environment would be considered an asset. Effective interpersonal and communication skills are also required.

SALARY                                   $39,910 - $55,962 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
