This is a challenging yet rewarding leadership role as a Senior Veterinarian & Head of Laboratory Animal Services in the largest medical research institute in Canada dedicated to children’s health.  You will directly influence decisions to support a vast array of scientific research. The role provides the ability to positively impact the use and care of animals use for research at SickKids and the opportunity to develop collaborative relationships with investigators and research personnel. Responsible for managing all resources required for efficient conduct of research using animals and for compliance with regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees all veterinary medical care, husbandry services and technical and surgical services provided by Laboratory Animal Services (LAS) 
  • Directs the strategic, budgetary, planning and administrative functions of LAS
  • Directs the functions and responsibilities required to maintain the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) accreditation.   
  • Serves as a liaison for all federal and provincial animal program inspections 
  • Provides support to the Compliance Support Veterinarian and ensures compliance with the institutional policies, provincial regulations and national standards for the welfare of animals in science and educational activities 
  • Advises, consults and instructs investigators, staff and students regarding animal use and care issues, techniques and regulations   
  • Serves as the voting members of the SickKids’ and the TCP’s Animal Care Committee (ACC) and provides advice and assistance to the ACC on regulatory and animal health issues, pain control and experimental methodology
  • Ensures the highest standards of safety and training are met for all personnel working in the LAS facility
  • Initiates and leads major operational process improvements and develops strategic relationships both externally and internally 
  • People management responsibilities providing leadership and mentoring for the LAS leadership team
  • As a member of the Research Operations leadership team, works in collaboration to ensure strategic objectives are met including ongoing focus on innovation, leadership development and service excellence
  • Provides oversight and management of over $3 million annual budget
  • Manages staff of 30 professional animal care personnel.  Provides direct supervision to the Manager, LAS Facility Operations, Clinical Veterinarian, Compliance Support Veterinarian, Coordinator of the Animal Care Committee and the Administrative Assistant

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree
  • Veterinary license issued by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario
  • Postdoctoral training program in the laboratory animal science field
  • Minimum seven years of experience working as a Clinical Veterinarian in a large and complex animal care and use program
  • Previous experience with people management
  • Understanding of CCAC and Animals for Research Act accreditation standards
  • Knowledge of the regulatory and ethical requirements related to the use of animals for research purposes
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able effectively communicate complex issues both verbally and in writing
  • A strong-service-oriented perspective
  • Advanced MS Outlook and Word skills
  • Multi-tasking abilities
